Bahaullah - (1817 - 1892)

Bahaullah (1817 to 1892) was the founder of the Baha'i Faith. In 1863, Bahaullah wrote a "Tablet," as his letters and spiritual writings are called amongst Baha'is, to the head of Russia, Czar Alexander II, calling on the Czar to accept him (Bahaullah) as a messeger of God.

Bahaullah, who was writing from a prison, appeared to wish the Czar to know that, despite his apparent weak position as a prisoner, his position as a spiritual teacher was a strong one, backed, as he believed, by God. He does this by citing the trial of Jesus before Herod, hoping to demonstrate that though Jesus too had been a prisoner, his spiritual status was a strong one, nevertheless. But, in making his case, he says something that causes us at The Tomb of Jesus Christ Website to ask: Did Bahaullah know that Jesus had gone to India?:

"Consider and call thou to mind the days whereon the Spirit of God (Jesus) appeared, and Herod gave judgement against him. God, however, aided Him with the hosts of the unseen, and protected Him with truth, and sent Him down unto another land, according to His promise. He, verily, ordaineth what He pleaseth. Thy Lord truly preserveth whom He willeth, be he in the midst of the seas, or in the maw of the serpent, or beneath the sword of the oppressor." (The

Summons of the Lord of Hosts: Tablets of Bahaullah, Baha'i World Centre, 2002, p.84)

We see from the above quote from Bahaullah that he clearly believed that Jesus made his way to "another land." We see that Bahaullah stated that Jesus was aided "with the hosts of the unseen." In spiritual jargon, this could of course mean "angels" or spiritual forces. But the phrase, "hosts of the unseen" could also mean human beings who helped him after his ordeal on the cross--helped him to escape to India.

Why would Bahaullah have believed that Jesus escaped his ordeal and made his way to "another land"? We are of the opinion that at one time it was common knowledge, amongst Muslims, that Jesus travelled a great deal, and made his way to Kashmir, as some of the documents at this website reveal.

Which Herrod?

Was Bahaullah talking about the 'Herod' from the childhood of Jesus or the Herod he was taken to at the time of the Crucifixion?

The phrase, "gave judgement against him," could refer to the order given by Herod to kill the Jewish babies at the time of Jesus' birth. But that was not a judgement only against Jesus - so this would suggest Bahaullah was talking about this Herod.

Interestingly Bahaullah was not concerned with promoting the 'Jesus in India' theory. The reference we are presenting here only came about when an anology was drawn by Bahaullah.
